2013 was a productive year for SpatialKey! Taking a moment to pause and pull together this Year in Review gave us a full sense of the great things we accomplished. We want to thank all of our clients for their continued support and commitment to evolving the SpatialKey product suite. We thoroughly enjoyed working together to deliver more innovation.

Let’s carry this momentum forward to 2014!

Cheers,

– The SpatialKey Team

Before we dive into all of the great product enhancements, we wanted to share some of our higher level accomplishments this year.

After that, we will take a look at new apps and features, both big and small.

Finally, check out a sneak peek of the what’s already happening in 2014.

Marketing & Partnerships

SpatialKey’s web presence

Early in 2013, our website, support site, and blog got a facelift and were enhanced with better and targeted content. Feeding off of that momentum, we also created a suite of videos discussing the business application of the SpatialKey products and our culture of innovation. We are very proud of our compelling story as I’m sure you can tell.

Ecosystem

At SpatialKey, we believe you need choices and that innovation is borne by agile, customer-focused companies who are strategically committed to the pursuit of excellence in their core competencies. Which flood modeler best represents your view of risk and regional concentrations? What data warehousing solution provides the most up-to-date views of your business? Who knows the insurance business better than you? Working with specialist firms and your resident experts, SpatialKey is truly able to offer a best of breed solution for a seamless user experience!

We are fostering a collaborative and interoperable environment with leading technology platforms, content providers and client in-house systems. This ecosystem brings the best scientific and innovative thinking to the market and delivers seamless solutions and operating environments for your business-critical processes. Insurers can now leverage SpatialKey throughout the insurance lifecycle from product management, to underwriting, to exposure management, to claims adjudication.

To name a few, we have partnered with iPartners and Innovation Group to develop seamless integrations for our mutual clients; we have worked to serve up expert content from public data sources and commercial firms, like JBA Risk Management, KatRisk, GfK GeoMarketing and Willis Re; and we have co-developed numerous SpatialKey apps with Willis Re, Aspen, and RLI.

On top of the latest events

2013 proved to be a intense year of severe storm events with significant loss from the tornados in Oklahoma and Illinois. Flood also generated significant disruptions and loss across the globe, and many of our clients were able to quickly assess the extent of damage to events in the US, Canada, UK, and Central Europe.

Working closely with our content partners, we were able to get critical event information in the hands of our clients shortly following (and during) these events, enabling them to provide relief and aid to their customers.

SpatialKey Features and Apps

Hail app

The U.S. has been impacted by several devastating hail outbreaks this year. Our clients require a rich analytic solution to help them understand and respond to these events. As such, we built a flexible and extensible application platform that allows us to integrate hail data from leading content providers.

During the analysis process, each location is enhanced with the the relevant hail sizes that each was subject to. Once complete, the dashboard is launched and you can immediately visualize your impacted exposures in the context of the hail footprints. As with all SpatialKey applications, you can flexibly filter, segment, and visualize hazard data and any attributes within your location dataset to understand and quantify the impact of these events and help mobilize your response.

Big impact features

Dashboard Templates

Do you import weekly, monthly, or quarterly data and find yourself creating a new dashboard for each dataset? SpatialKey’s new Dashboard Templates feature removes the tedium and frustration created by redundant report production processes and let’s you get straight to analysis. Now, you can create a dashboard once and reuse it as a template for multiple datasets without having to recreate the dashboard each time.

These templates help automate report production, so you can immediately interrogate and derive insights from a new data vintage, a derivative dataset, or any other dataset of similar content. If you want to learn more, check out Dashboard Templates.

Redesigned pods

In February, we unveiled our redesigned pods. Now nearly a year later, we hardly recognize the old SpatialKey in the image on the left below. We hope you are enjoying the new look and feel.

The new pods also came with powerful new features:

  • The Statistics Pod can now contain multiple stats in a single pod and can be oriented vertically or horizontally to optimize space in your dashboard.

  • The Unique Value List Pod received a couple of updates: Totals row and the ability to add multiple calculated and grouping columns to a single pod. We hope you’ve found this functionality helps to conserve screen real estate and better organize your dashboards.

Thematic mapping updates

In June, we took a big step in expanding our international support with the integration of global boundaries. Some of the new boundaries require an additional subscription level so please reach out to us if you are interested in learning about the available options.

Images below: Country and France Postal Code (requires additional subscription level) thematic boundary examples

Comparison Mapping with any Geographic Boundary

Our comparison analytics became more powerful with the expansion of thematic visualization support to any boundary, anywhere in the world! Whether it is a built-in boundary used for standard thematic mapping (US County or High Resolution Postal Codes for example) or a custom shapefile that has been joined with your dataset, now you can view results of comparing two data points thematically by these boundaries.

Visualizing portfolio growth between 2011 and 2012 for a client’s Japan portfolio (dark green signifies larger growth)

In addition to simple portfolio growth, you can visualize premium adequacy, compare results from various models, perform market share analyses, and much more. Select any two data points and how you wish to relate them, and you will have a powerful map, telling you much more about your data than before!

SpatialKey Architecture

Leveraging best practices and new features of Amazon Web Services, SpatialKey has built out a multi-tiered architecture, leveraging a Virtual Private Cloud and multiple availability zones to increase security and the availability of SpatialKey in the event of system or cloud outages.

Additionally, in the event of catastrophic data loss, we have multiple copies of critical data in multiple locations including both the West Coast and East Coast of the United States.

API

Integrate directly with SpatialKey using the Data Management API, which is now more flexible and simple to use than ever. Before, only IT and development teams could implement the Data Management API. With the new Data Management API Command Line Tool, typical users of SpatialKey can leverage this functionality without any programming knowledge.

It’s the little things that count

Now with only a single click, you can create a map! Click to “Let SpatialKey Decide” so you can get into your dashboard quicker. You still have flexibility to change visualizations and metrics once in your dashboard but with this feature, you can save the decision making until after you have started exploring your data. Now you can find the closest address to any point on the map. Right click on any point on your map and click to get “lat/long” or “closest address”.Address and lat/long information will be retrieved and you will be provided with direct links to copy this information or view in Google Maps.
Default basemaps were updated to use data from MapBox, a leader in the geo-imagery space. With this update, we increased our zooming capabilities by an additional zoom level.
Left image shows max zoom level before this release. Right image shows zoom level with new basemaps.
We made a few redesigns on the layer manager, bringing frequently used features front and center!
As an initial step towards providing multiple point visualization options, we have added an additional marker icon. We hope this has helped you add some visual distinction to your dashboards by calling attention to select datasets. For those of you who license the Policy Exposed Limit feature, we’ve added the much desired ability to export policy files and to review and edit the policy file setup.
The Data Upload Wizard got smarter! We shuffled the screens, added a couple additional options and now the Data Upload Wizard is able to learn from you as you walk through the upload process, delivering an enhanced user experience. For those of you with a little OCD, the pods now snap to a grid so that you can nicely line up the edges without making yourself crazy.
Integration of multiple geocoding options to give you flexibility and control over your data.Along with this feature, we added the ability to export geocoded latitude and longitude coordinates and visualize geocodes on any basemap. For more details, check out Geocoding Options.

2014 sneak peek

We also made substantial progress in 2013 on items that won’t be officially released until 2014. Here is a quick sneak peek…

  • Monitor and understand your portfolio exposure with the new Portfolio Composition app. This app will be accessible from your desktop or mobile device, so you can access these insights, anytime and anywhere.
  • Evaluate and understand peak portfolio accumulations relative to US fluvial, pluvial and surge hazards through our forthcoming Flood Analyst app.
  • Configure the national currency of fields included in your datasets and your dashboards will display them appropriately.
  • In additional to the CRESTA 2007 data, we will be adding CRESTA 2010 and 2013 boundary data.
  • You will soon be able to recover dashboards that you may have closed before saving so you don’t accidentally use your work!
  • Seamlessly integrate your systems with SpatialKey with our re-architected Data Management API and new Embedded Client API. We have been working behind the scenes to expanded our API capabilities and put more flexibility in your hands. Early in 2014, you will get access to these new capabilities.

Stay tuned for updates on these items and much more to come in 2014. We want to thank you again for an amazing 2013.
